How to network with Photovoltaic SPDs for System safety

PV installations are defenseless when we talk about aftermath of lightning currents occur in a stormy weather. The caliber of any PV installation is defined by the efficiency to which the solar panels can withstand against the potential impact of lightning discharges. Solar Panels and the related solar components are the expensive creation of technology and in case of repeated lightning events; the PV systems cannot undergo repair or any kind of replacement again & again. To deal with the case we have Solar Surge Protection Devices that are cascaded in conjunction with the well-influenced Lightning Protection Systems.

Solar SPDs are directly involved with our Photovoltaic electrical systems to provide a discharge path to the surges or over-voltages that can damage our equipment and structure. There is wholesome probability that within a blink of eye an appliance can suffer damage due to fault current generated because of switching or lightning surges, if Surge Protector is not present to barrier that undesired generated current.

Surge Protection Devices are installed at primary spot to protect major components of the PV arrangement like inverters, Junction Boxes, Solar Modules, Transmission/Reception  section  etc. The electromagnetic interference caused during thunderstorms induces transients, either directly or indirectly. Data communication and cable lines are equally exposed in the installation as the solar panels and long term exposure to these transients deteriorates Photovoltaic System’s dielectric and insulation till the urge of final break down.

The planned placement of the transient or surge suppressor alleviates these concerns by maintaining the voltage limits in between the appropriate range. The solution inherent merging of Gas Discharge Tubes, Metal Oxide Varistor, Diodes along with the Surge Suppressor; this trigger the function of Photovoltaic Surge Protection Devices in an unquestionable qualified way. Moreover, the consideration of Surge Protectors in the complete arrangement does not bother the working of circuitry.

Standard 61643-31 takes Surge Protection devices in account for Photovoltaic Systems. The standard justifies low voltage PV SPDs to be connected on the DC Side of the photovoltaic setup and rated up to 1500V DC.
